AMD Wins Smart Commute’s “Employer of the Year Award” for York Region

The Markham, Ontario campus of AMD (NYSE: AMD) has been presented the 2014 Smart Commute “Employer of the Year” award for York Region. The annual awards aim to recognize employers leading the way on sustainable commuting practices.1

AMD’s “Go Green” Commuter Program began in 2007, the same year as Metrolinx’s Smart Commute Program began helping employers and commuters explore smart travel options such as walking, cycling, transit, carpooling and teleworking. Since then the two organizations have collaborated to increase adoption of sustainable commuting at AMD. To gauge progress, an employee survey was conducted in April 2014 and showed approximately 4 out of 10 employees use clean transportation options, a 12 percent increase from 2009.2 AMD employees in Markham have logged 1.75 million kilometers of avoided driving, amounting to 39,000 kg of reduced carbon dioxide emissions since 2007.3

“AMD is honored to win this award,” stated Matt Skynner, AMD corporate vice president and general manager, AMD Canada. “We believe it is the responsibility of employers to provide and support programs that mitigate congestion and pollution from our commuting workforce. In addition to environmental benefits, the programs represent an opportunity to help our employees reduce transportation inconveniences and costs, as well as increase wellbeing in the cases of biking or walking to work, for example. We are proud to have grown AMD’s ‘Go Green’ Commuter Program over the years and value the partnership with Smart Commute.”

Various incentives are offered to AMD employees who choose “Go Green” commute options including reserved parking and ride-matching for carpoolers, store discounts to Bike Depot for cyclists, and electric vehicle (EV) charging for EV owners. Additional incentives and promotions are provided by Smart Commute Markham, Richmond Hill, such as an “Emergency Ride Home Program” for participating employees who need a qualifying taxi ride, and onsite lunch-and-learns covering special topics like eco-efficient driving.
