Speaking to shareholders at Microsoft Corp.’s annual meeting today, Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer highlighted the company’s recent product launches and financial performance, and outlined the company’s shift to devices and services.

“In 2012, our revenue grew to a record $73.7 billion,” Ballmer said. “We also maintained strong cost discipline resulting in cash flow from operations of $31.6 billion, an increase of 17 percent from the prior year. In addition, we returned more than $10 billion to shareholders through stock buybacks and dividends.”

Over the past several months, the company has shipped an unprecedented wave of new products, including Windows 8, Microsoft Surface, Windows Phone 8, Xbox Music, “Halo 4″ and Windows Server 2012, in addition to a host of other products, services and applications.

Ballmer noted that over time the full value of the company’s software will be seen and felt in how people use devices and services at work and play: “Focusing on devices and services will impact how we run the company, how we develop new experiences and how we take products to market for both consumers and businesses. The work we have accomplished in the past year and the road map in front of us brings this to life.”

It’s been one full month since Windows 8 became generally available, and to date Microsoft has sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses. Companies worldwide are already adopting Windows 8 including Johnson & Johnson, BT (British Telecom), 20th Century Fox Television Distribution, Bank of America Corp. and Seton Hall University. In addition, the Windows Phone Store now has over 120,000 apps, which include 46 of the top 50, and is rising daily. Microsoft also pointed to recent Xbox sales during the week of Black Friday, which totaled over 750,000 Xbox consoles in the U.S. alone.

Looking forward, Ballmer addressed some of the strategic opportunities that lay ahead.

“Helping businesses move to the cloud is one of our largest opportunities,” Ballmer said. “All the online services people use today run on servers in datacenters around the globe. The volume of Internet services used will continue to grow as people connect to the Internet from more devices for more purposes — fueling incredible opportunity for the company.”

Ballmer also noted that Office 365 is on track to be one of Microsoft’s fastest growing businesses ever. Organizations of all sizes turn to Office 365 for world-class productivity solutions, including most recently Japan Airlines, The All India Council for Technical Education, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Toyota Motor Corp.

The following proposals were acted on by the company’s shareholders at the shareholder meeting:

Elected nine directors to serve until the next annual meeting of shareholders. All director nominees received a vote of more than 96 percent of votes cast.

Ratified the selection of Deloitte & Touche LLP as the company’s independent auditor, with a vote of more than 98 percent of votes cast.

Approved, on an advisory basis, the fiscal year 2012 compensation of the company’s named executive officers. The advisory measure received more than 94 percent of votes cast.

Approved, an amendment and restatement of Company’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan, receiving 99 percent of votes cast.

Rejected a shareholder proposal to adopt cumulative voting. The shareholder proposal received 26 percent of votes cast.

Microsoft’s board of directors consists of Steven A. Ballmer, Microsoft chief executive officer; Dina Dublon, former chief financial officer of JPMorgan Chase; William H. Gates, Microsoft chairman; Maria M. Klawe, president of Harvey Mudd College; Stephen J. Luczo, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Seagate Technology PLC; David F. Marquardt, general partner at August Capital; Charles H. Noski, former vice chairman of Bank of America Corp.; Dr. Helmut Panke, former chairman of the board of management at BMW Bayerische Motoren Werke AG; and John W. Thompson, chief executive officer of Virtual Instruments. Seven of the nine board members are independent of Microsoft, which is consistent with the requirement in the company’s governance guidelines that a substantial majority be independent.

Walmart today announced a new search engine for Walmart.com to help millions of shoppers browse, discover and purchase items in an easy, fast and intuitive manner. Built from the ground up by @WalmartLabs, the research and technology hub for innovation at Walmart, the engine uses semantic search technology to anticipate the intent of a shopper’s search to deliver highly relevant results for them. Walmart.com has already seen an approximate 10-15 percent increase in shoppers completing a purchase after searching for a product using the new search engine.

Named Polaris, the new search engine was developed by a small team within @WalmartLabs and completed in ten months. The group includes experts in information retrieval, machine learning and text mining with experience from top search and e-commerce companies and renowned research institutions. Over the past few months, Walmart.com has migrated the site over to Polaris and it is now fully powered by the search engine. Polaris is also used for mobile search and will expand to power the company’s international e-commerce sites over the coming months.

“Search is a crown jewel for any e-commerce company to own,” said Neil Ashe, president and CEO of Walmart Global eCommerce. “Today’s announcement underscores our commitment to owning technology that is fundamental in giving our millions of customers anytime, anywhere access to the products they want at the lowest prices.”

“With Polaris, we are giving users the ability to connect with the items they want but also surface items based on their interests and likely intent,” said Sri Subramaniam, vice president for @WalmartLabs and head of the Polaris initiative. “This is the start of what we imagine search to be as we continue to deliver products to accelerate Walmart’s global e-commerce efforts.”

Searching for a shopping result is very different from conducting a general search. Polaris is based on the Social Genome project, a platform that connects people to places, events and products giving Walmart a richer level of understanding about customers and products. The new search engine uses advanced algorithms including query understanding and synonym mining to glean user intent in delivering results. When a user types in the word “denim,” it returns results on jeans or “chlorine tablets” returns results related to pool equipment.

Polaris focuses on engagement understanding, which takes into account how a user is behaving with the site to surface the best results for them. It delivers a new and intuitive results page when browsing for topics instead of giving a standard list of search results allowing shoppers to discover new items they may not have considered. When a user types in “patio furniture,” they get a colorful page with multiple patio set options for the backyard along with a banner showing featured items on sale.

The @WalmartLabs team continues to evolve Polaris and is working on new advances that will be rolled into Walmart.com. It is the latest innovation from @WalmartLabs. In the past year, the group has created Shopycat, a social gift finder; Classrooms by Walmart, a program to make back-to-school shopping easer; Get on the Shelf, a crowdsourcing contest to unearth new products for Walmart; and Social Media Analytics, tools that use social chatter to select items to be carried by Walmart.

About Walmart

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The origins of smart glass can be traced back to the year 1704, when the first electrochromic material was discovered, but interest in smart glass technology only started to gain significant momentum in the early 1970s, when the number of research activities resulting in patent applications and issued patents increased rapidly. This led to the development of improved fabrication processes, advanced properties and an increased number of applications spanning many industrial sectors.

BCC published its first report on smart glass in February 2009. Since then, the market for these materials and related products has continued to expand. New technological developments and industry changes have also taken place.

The primary goal of this report is to provide new insights into current smart glass technology, as well as to outline technological trends and offer an updated market analysis for these materials.

Specifically, the major objectives of this study are:

To provide an update review of smart glasses, including a description of their types and fabrication technologies.

To highlight new technological developments in smart glass manufacturing while outlining technical issues.

To review current fields of application for smart glass and investigate emerging applications.

To estimate current global markets for smart glass based on type, application and region, with growth forecasts through 2016 for each market segment.

To identify important technology and market trends within each market segment.

To offer an updated review of current producers of smart glass.

To determine trends in U.S. patents issued during the period from 2009 to 2011.

REASONS FOR DOING THIS STUDY

The term smart glass refers to a group of chromogenic materials that change their light transmission properties when voltages are applied. The ability of these materials to change opacity and/or color when voltages are applied has been exploited in numerous applications, including architectural use, residential and commercial construction, interior design, museum artwork expositions, high-end appliances, advanced displays, automotive mirrors and privacy glass.

In 2008, the market for smart glass-based products was valued at more than $1 billion. After several years of healthy growth, the market for smart glass experienced a slowdown in growth as a result of the global economic downturn in 2008 and 2009. Since BCC’s last report in 2009, global economic conditions have gradually improved. In addition, smart glass fabrication technologies have continued to evolve. Several new applications have been developed, whereas others are ready to exit the development stage and enter commercialization.

The principal reason for doing this study is to present a current assessment of the smart glass industry by focusing on markets and technologies, as well as to outline future trends and key developments.

There is also a need to evaluate the current status and future trends of the smart glass industry from a global standpoint. As use of smart glass-based products expands and new fields of application emerge, information on regional production, sales and supplier types becomes more valuable.

An equally important reason for undertaking this study is to provide technical insights into smart glass manufacturing by:

Providing a review of fabrication technologies.

Identifying current technical issues.

Providing an overview of the main global research and development (R&D) activities related to smart glass, resulting in the issuance of patents.

Illustrating the latest technological developments.

This information can assist companies in identifying opportunities for process and productivity improvements, resulting in a positive impact on future market growth.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

This study will be of primary interest to all companies that:

Manufacture, sell and distribute smart glass and smart glass-based products.

Fabricate advanced glass products.

Offer coating and lamination services for the glass industry.

Supply electrochromic materials, liquid crystals, emulsions, films and coloring chemicals.

Provide solar and heat-control devices and related instrumentation.

Offer technical and/or marketing services for architectural, residential and commercial window installation.

Provide exterior and interior design applications for the automobile industry.

This study applies to industry segments such as construction, transportation, aerospace, electronics, energy and consumer products.

The study is mainly directed toward executives, directors, operations managers, sales and marketing managers, and strategic planners working within the previously mentioned industries. Universities and research facilities may also find this study to be a good source of technical information regarding smart glass technology, materials and applications, which can be used as a baseline for new or expanded R&D activities. Librarians of technical information and research centers can also use this report to provide critical data to product managers, market analysts, researchers and other professionals needing detailed and updated analysis of the smart glass industry.

SCOPE OF REPORT

This study provides an updated review of smart glass technology, including materials and fabrication processes, and identifies current and emerging applications for this technology.

BCC Research determines the current market status of smart glass, defines trends and presents growth forecasts for the next five years. The smart glass industry is also analyzed on a global basis from the standpoint of both manufacturing and consumption. In addition, technological issues, including key events and the latest process developments, are discussed.

Stagee.com, currently in invitation-only closed alpha, was designed to help talent get discovered, find professional opportunities and reach new audiences.

“We are honored to have received this recognition from BizSpark. We applaud Microsoft for reaching out to so many promising startups around the world,” said Lior, Co-Founder and CEO of Stagee.

The Israeli-founded company raised $330,000 in seed, shortly after the idea was formulated, and has officially announced its intention to run a ‘Round A’ Financing following today’s win, looking to secure a couple of million dollars.

Stagee talent profiles provide a visually rich showcasing environment where users can upload videos, show reels, tour schedules, tracks, photo spreads, and blog posts. Users can create and maintain a buzz with social tools and build their audience while earning points for views, votes and ratings.

“We designed Stagee specifically to serve the needs of actors, comedians, musicians, models, dancers and photographers who are working hard to gain and maintain exposure on a global scale,” said Maimon. “Besides hard work, the two things you need to succeed in this business are a strong fan base and good contacts. This is where Stagee comes in.”

“Stagee was launched to fill a void in the social Web where no social networking platforms have existed exclusively for the specific career needs of entertainers,” adds Jonathan Schenker, who has recently joined the company as a Partner and CMO. “A&R executives, casting directors, and producers are using the filter-enabled platform as a comprehensive tool and by doing so increase their likelihood of finding ‘the next big talent’ through the internet,” he summarizes.

“Every technology decision was made with intense thought and focus into making sure that Stagee will be a friendly and comfortable nest for talent,” said Ofer Zelig, CTO of Stagee. “We are confident that entertainers will see Stagee as a strong social tool for self promotion that is customized for their industry.”

e2b software (www.e2bsoft.com) announced today a strategic alliance and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreement with Epicor Software Corporation to private-label its Anytime Collect (www.anytimecollect.com) credit and collections management software for Epicor enterprise resource planning (ERP).

Epicor®, a global provider of business software solutions for the manufacturing, distribution, retail and services industries, will market the application as Epicor Cash Collect available to Epicor ERP customers. Epicor Cash Collect is a new module that extends the capabilities of Epicor ERP with automation and workflow to help businesses better manage accounts receivable, reduce days sales outstanding (DSO), and improve cash flow and access to cash.

“The latest release of Anytime Collect was designed for companies like Epicor to provide private-labeled credit and collections management applications for their customers,” said e2b software president Lynne Henslee. “We anticipate this being the first of many major private-label relationships for Anytime Collect.”

The Anytime Collect log-in process defines the logos, icons, and branding for the associated private-label partner and their customers allowing Anytime collect to be quickly deployed as a private-labeled application for software publishers, industry associations, financial institutions, or other organizations who want to provide complimentary accounts receivable collections capabilities to their customers.

“The addition of Epicor Cash Collect to the Epicor ERP suite is very timely, as we have a similar collections application for another Epicor product that’s been very popular with our customers,” said Chris Purcell, product marketing manager at Epicor. “Epicor Cash Collect provides enhanced functionality for Epicor ERP customers to help them get more value out of their ERP investment. It’s the right product for our customers since it scales from small to large credit departments, is easy to use, available as a purchase or Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) subscription license, and deployed via the cloud or on-premise.”

Epicor will sell Epicor Cash Collect via direct sales and Epicor channel partner sales. Epicor will provide frontline support for Epicor Cash Collect. For more information, visit www.epicor.com/cloud/cashcollect.

About e2b software:

Step Automation and Test (Step AT) today announced ANTS, a tiny, stackable, single-board computer (SBC) for embedded systems. At only 35mm x 35mm, the ANTS platform serves applications that need specific, embedded functionality in a small space. It offers customizable features, a wide range of communication protocols, and low power consumption, making it ideal for use in manufacturing, energy and academic industries.

A New Generation of SBCs

Programmable SBCs address a multitude of industrial control and embedded applications, whether installed in a rack-mount system on the factory floor or directly in a machine or device. Increasingly complex applications require a new generation of easy-to-use yet powerful SBCs. The flexible, off-the-shelf ANTS platform is one of the smallest and most cost-effective SBCs available. It is based on the NI LabVIEW Embedded Module for ARM Microcontrollers, and is well-suited for industrial and embedded applications using simplified graphical programming for a fast, out-of-box experience, ultimately helping customers create quality products while reducing cost and time to market.

SBCs are commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) devices that require little to no board design knowledge for operation, have the flexibility of being used as a standalone board, or with certain standards, stacked on top of each other to add extra functionality, and can be used in applications with physical constraints because they do not require backplanes or card carriers. Unlike traditional COTS SBC systems purchased as a whole with unnecessary components, with ANTS, engineers can purchase only the hardware they need and easily configure the system with graphical programming.

Embedded Solutions for Manufacturing, Energy, Academic Applications

The stackable ANTS boards give engineers highly customizable features for real-time, deterministic measurements. Users can mix and match multiple boards to create a reliable solution with specific features. For example, engineers can add wireless and CAN to a specific stack, and additional analog input channels to another.

With these customizable features and small form factor, the low-power embedded computer is designed for manufacturing automation, assembly line control, industrial monitoring, mechatronics, robotics, and distributed data logging. It is ideal for applications with physical size constraints, that cover long distances, or that involve OEM or high-volume applications.

The ANTS platform empowers students to innovate in engineering courses, lab exercises, and design projects. Its tiny form factor and easy-to-use embedded programming give students a hands-on training tool that bridges the gap between theory and practical application.

Additional Specifications

The ANTS platform features analog and digital I/O, including a high-resolution, 24-bit DAQ board with 0-10V analog input. Add-on boards offer PWM, counters, and connectivity with additional buses. Step AT offers more than 15 modules and accessories to help engineers add the exact functionality they need to each application.
